OVER A CHICKEN COMMERCIAL

I can’t believe what this little video does to me. It’s simple, slick, calculated and done on behalf of a company I don’t even support. But there’s something about it… especially toward the end, you’ll see. The music and the images and the little girl’s Veda-like smile… perfect. I burst out laughing-sort-of-crying the first time I watched it; I’ll admit. And the second.

What a great ad. Great concept, perfectly executed and so subtle. Wiping a tear from my eyes too. Still don’t want any KFC though.

  2. Lauren Owens says:

Great ad. Too bad it was wasted on KFC. Would have expected it for a K-jewelry commercial or something.

You guys are right! It feels like a beautiful answer in search of a question. A jewelry spot would have fit better with the elegant look and pacing, but it might have been a little harder to tie in the appeal over all those years. Then again, if the little kids could have been giving each other a toy necklace or something, maybe that would’ve done it.

And I have to admit that it’s a pretty plausible opening, focusing on that woman catching the scent of the fried chicken. It *is* often smells that bring back memories.

Surprised to hear you describe it as “subtle,” though, Peter! I suppose it is a little light on dialogue, but to me this is one of the most brutally emotion-stirring pieces of film ever! It fairly grabs you, holds your attention and breaks your heart, all in about 80 seconds…

Oh, and you both might like another of my favorite commercials… a little more masculine in its tone and subject matter, but equally affecting, I thought.

and the song! the song! That alone will jerk some tears from you…Too bad it’s not a psa for long marriages.

  5. colin says:

Now THAT is the perfect application!

  6. Jack says:

I love KFC frilled chicken and Jan loves the cole slaw. Maybe we will feel younger the next time there.

  7. penny says:

The KFC hit at the end makes me crazy sick. Blechk! I wish it hadn’t been made at all if they are going to end with that.

  8. [...] Improbably, I have been deeply affected by another short video, just a few short weeks after that last time. [...]
