Thinking of a witty remark on one’s way out of the room or otherwise too late; hindsight wit or afterwit. Also such a remark.
[From French esprit de l'escalier, from esprit (wit) + escalier (stairs).]
A great term that applies quite often to my life, and perhaps to yours as well. Got any good ones, like from anecdotes in your own daily encounters? I bet you do.
(I personally am holding out for the French language to offer up a corresponding phrase for wishing you could think of a witty remark at all, perhaps for other people to respond to, more specifically something interesting you could post on your weblog. Maybe something like, “Iyave… Howyousay… Nussing.”
